March 2-6,2020

Highlights from this week

Social Studies
We continued our look at communities.  What makes up a community?  What are needs and wants in a community? Students worked in groups to create maps of a community they would like to live in. There was a lot of discussion around the important parts of a community and what things should be close together in a community.

The yellow team was busy exploring important information for their upcoming field trip to Central Library (March 9-13) and the red team had time to explore paper maps which was an interesting way of viewing rather than seeing a map on the smart board through other forms of technology.

Math
This week in math we started learning about subtraction.  We explored subtraction of numbers from 10.  Students have been learning a variety of methods to show their thinking; counters, pictures, number lines.  Ask your kiddo to show you their favourite way.
We played a game with dice to represent subtraction number sentences.

Thank you for continuing to practice home reading with your kiddo.  Please continue to send books for exchange each day as students finish them.  Students are doing a fantastic job improving their reading with your assistance and continued practice at school.

Many families may have noticed an ice/water puddle forming at the bottom of the hill near our Adventure playground. Teachers remind students daily to keep safely away from the ice and water.  We would appreciate your support in also reminding your children of the safety of not playing near the water and ice at school recess times.  Thank you.

February 18 - 21, 2020

Highlights from this week...

** Check out a few updated pictures on Student Showcase

Science
This week we began talking about animal adaptations.  We read a book called "A Warm Winter Tail by Carrie A. Pearson.
Students demonstrated through pictures how two of the animals adapted in the winter.

What do animals do in the winter?
Where to they go?
How do they stay warm?

Vocabulary we talked about and will continue to visit next week:
hibernation, migration, animal, summer, fall, winter, spring, arctic, camouflage

Math
In coordination with 100 days of school we worked a lot with the 100 chart this week.
A fun game students have enjoyed playing is Give the dog a bone where they have to search for numbers on the 100 chart.  This game helps to familiarize them with the location of numbers on the chart.

Students had a fun time observing and comparing the collections of 100 things brought in by everyone.  There was a wide variety of items.

We worked at counting 100 items by 1s, 5s, 10s and for a challenge, by 2s.

Gym
Students wrapped up the learning practice of skipping.  Next week will begin learning basketball.

Students continue to find success with their daily reading practice and home reading is helping the to succeed further.

Thanks to everyone for the Jump Rope for Heart Donations.

February 3rd to 7th, 2020 and Valentine’s Info.

What a fantastic week!

We enjoyed a fantastic time at the CPOs performance of the Hockey Sweater on Wednesday morning.  Thank you to all of the volunteers who were able to come along and help out.
When we returned in the afternoon, students chose one of our familiar graphic organizers (4 square, event map, six square or y-chart) to show what they enjoyed and remembered from the field trip.

Every day in math we practice "Number Talks" to help strengthen our math skills and explain our thinking about math.  This week we introduced a new strategy called Disappearing Dan.  Ask your child how it works!

This week in writing we worked to tell our opinion about books we read together.   Our goal was to try and use the word because to try and explain our opinion.  As always, we try our best to focus on printing on the line and appropriate finger spacing.

Friday was a busy day in our classroom. Reading buddies from Joanne Cardinal Schubert Highschool came to spend time with us and then we had time with our grade 2 and 3 buddies to work on page in our visual journals to help begin to tell our story.  This was a good beginning to our Central Library field trip where our theme centres around "How are our personal stories woven together and what is my story?"

Along with the other Grade 1 classes we completed the Beakerhead Ingenuity Challenge.  We worked to explore with elastics and create catapults.  Our final video is short but shows the final product we worked together to create.  Your child can give you more details about the part they played in the challenge!

Watch the video here....

Friendship day February 12
Some families have been asking about Valentine's card exchange in the classroom. For those students who wish to give cards, we will exchange cards on February 12th.  Please make sure your child has enough cards for the 45 students in our classroom.  There is no need to write a name in the “TO” space on each card, but rather, have your child simply sign their name in the “FROM” space.

Reminders:
- There is no school on February 13 and 14 due to teachers convention.
- Family Day February 17 - no school
- Volunteer Opportunity - Ms. Karpick’s class is going to The Central Library March 9-13 and is still in need of volunteers. If you can help out, specifically on March 10 or 11, please email cakarpick@cbe.ab.ca

January 27- 30

During math this week we were exploring a variety of ways to represent number sentences and "prove" our knowledge.  We explored representing through quick pics and target practice.

We continue to work on estimation, counting by 5s and 2s and explaining our thinking in math everyday.

This week our grade one community worked together on a building project we called "Poms Away".  This project was a continued exploration of creating with elastics.  We will share our final product/project work with Beakerhead and view projects submitted by other classrooms.  Be sure to check our our Tweets and student showcase to see what we came up with.

Students brought home collection envelopes for Jump Rope for Heart.  Collection will continue until February 20th.

February 5th is our field trip to the CPO.  Students will leave the school at 9am and our lunch will be a little later than normal that day.  Please ensure your child has a substantial breakfast that morning.
