Weekly update

Along with the cold weather and indoor recess we had a fantastic week of learning in our class.

Students learned about two types of robots, Ozobots and Dash. We will continue to use the robots for different learning jobs throughout the year.  Check out Twitter and the student showcase for some pictures of students exploring with the robots.

In math we used a new tool called a rekenrek (math rack) to help students develop addition (and subtraction) strategies, such as doubling or finding near doubles as well as thinking in terms of 5s and 10s, instead of counting from one each time or counting on in addition (and subtraction). Students improve their ability to regroup numbers when problem solving.

Next week in math we will be looking more closely at how we can use estimation as a tool for math.

The grade ones did a toy building challenge this week.  Each day we traveled to a new class an had the opportunity to build a new toy and challenge ourselves.  Mr. Kearney and Mrs. Harrold had students build mobiles and learn about balance.  Mrs. Kenney and Mr. Butler had students design and hockey player and make it move using magnets Mrs. Tjostheiem  and Ms. Karpick had students build a catapult. Students were unable to bring the catapults home but expressed an interest in the instructions, posted below.

We are still looking for longer cardboard tubes for another building project.  If you have wrapping tubes or know someone who could donate longer tubes to grade one, please let us know.

Rehearsals for the Lion King musical start this Tuesday.  Students will join Mrs. Bourgeois after they eat their lunch.  The commitment to choir is every Tuesday and Thursday from now until the performance in April.  We are very excited to see the students perform and the amazing final product.
